University have commemorated a team mate who passed away in December at their opening home game of the season.
“We had a little bit more to play for today,” Uni captain Mitch Porter said.
“We lost a brother in the off season, and we’re really happy we got the win for him”
The victory formed part of the club’s homage to the late Jacob Mabb.
The 21-year-old died in December from critical injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash during a trip to Bali.
“Mabby was a top bloke, he had a lot of friends,” Porters said.
“A lot of people around the club got a love for that boy.”
The players didn’t let down his memory.
University opened the scoring after 80 seconds through Matt Macaulay.
“In both A-grade and reserve grade (what would’ve been) the number 13 scored first,” coach Brad Tronc told The Daily.
They took a 33 point to 0 lead into half time before going on to take the win 47 points to 7.
In other results, Wynnum belted Maroochydore 52 points to 25, and Caloundra consigned Noosa to a zero and two start winning 27 points to 20.
